Hi everyone,
I am planning to buy a computer VERY soon because my laptop is about to die (Gateway Solo 1150, 2001). I am going back and forth on whether or not I should buy a MAC or a PC and would like to know what you guys think. As you saw from my embarrassing demonstration (or lack thereof) with the APPLE yesterday during my three minutes of fame, I am not too familiar with MACs, so is this a reason to get a MAC to become more familiar with it, especially since many people say they are better for design applications, or should I stick to something that I am comfortable with (i.e. PC)? Any thoughts on what brand (in regard to PCs) you like better would be helpful too.
And for those of you who have been grad students in the College of Education for awhile, do you think it's better to have a laptop that you can carry around with you, or do you think I would be okay with just having a desktop at home and using the labs that are available to us while I am at school?
Sorry for all the questions - just want to make as learned a decision as possible on this, especially since there will be $$ involved:)
Thanks for any and all help!
Kathryn :)

Hey hey,
I recently purchased a Macbook (and I believe Keith did as well). I installed the free download of Boot Camp that supports the operating system choice Martin described. it runs great.
I was also minimally familiar with Macs and got the Macbook to bone up on my skills. I currently run Windows more often than OS X, but it's nice to know I have the choice.
The install is very easy to do, and all keyboard commands native to the Mac still work when using Windows (CD eject button, volume up, brightness, etc.). You will need a licensed copy of Windows which will run you a few hundred smackers.
All in all, the Macbook route is much more expensive on paper. But, the neat little gadgets and gizmos you do get more than make up for the price. I couldn't be happier with my purchase, and Apple is even throwing in a free iPod Nano when you buy a Macbook up until the end of the month.
We get a minimal discount for being students, but somewhere to check is MacMall for good deals.
Best of luck with your decision!

Yeah, definitely ditto on the Apple. I'm a little ambivalent about the laptop question. I do love having one, but if work didn't pay for mine I'd be torn. For the money, of course a desktop is going to be a lot more computer. If you plan on doing any video or other multimedia work, this should be a consideration. But I do know people who use the MacBook Pro to do such things. And while it's really convenient having a laptop, it's much riskier as they have greater potential to be stolen, dropped or spilled upon. In general they just don't last as long.
I'm in the same boat. Finally gave up on my laptop that has been sitting on my bookshelf for almost 5 months. Taking the advice from your comments, I think I am going to go with the MacBook...

Thanks for all your comments! Mat and I are going to Orlando this weekend and will be visiting the Apple Store in the Florida Mall. Jade, I will let you know if I see anything there.
