Broad Statement of Goal (Must include improving technical expertise within an authentic context):
I have always used web design software, such as Macromedia Contribute, to do web pages, but I have never formerly used HTML. My goal for the semester is to learn HTML in conjunction with cascading style sheets (CSS). I will demonstrate this new knowledge by creating a website.
Steps to take to achieve goal:
1. Get a Grove account to use as practice space (9/11/06).
2. Read book about HTML and CSS (9/16/06-9/29/06).
3. Take netg courses online while reading book (9/16/06-9/29/06).
4. Develop website (9/17/06-11/1/06).
5. Present website to class (11/2/06).

I really think you might like the NetG course(s) available online. I started doing web stuff with Dreamweaver and Contribute as well, and I really felt inhibited in terms of what I could do without understanding how the code really works. I did the NetG html course and it really helped me out with troubleshooting and adding new elements. And, in all honesty, the course really isn't that easy without some sort of text to help you along. I started doing the html course (and a few other NetG courses thereafter) at work and found that I was better off doing them at home as I had to really focus all my attention on the material.
I also had a graphic designer friend lend me a book called "Don't Make Me Think: A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability" (2nd Edition) by Steve Krug. It's a really easy read and gives a lot of valuable insight to aspiring designers with no formal design background.
Good luck in your endeavor. And if you need any help with CSS down the line, I can point you to a bunch of great resources on the web. You can try csszengarden for starters.

Kathryn - I've got some online resources for HTML and CSS:
useit.com: usable information technology
http://www.useit.com/
(my favorite usability site)
Cool Homepages.com – Design Gallery
http://www.coolhomepages.com/
(tons of good layouts and color combinations)
Lynda.com: The browser-safe web palette
http://www.lynda.com/hex.html
(another good tutorial site)
Web page designing for designers – Typography
http://www.wpdfd.com/wpdtypo.htm (font design is also important in web design)
Another great website for learning HTML and I think they've recently added CSS is http://www.htmlgoodies.com I learned HTML from them back in high school, and I understand they've just gotten better over the years, or what you might want to do is learn some DHTML or a new language that I'm actually researching called RUBY. It started as a language for game design, but within the next year is supposed to become a big player in making Web2.0 Applications. If you're interested I'll let you know about it after I read my book on it.
